HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT MAKEUP ARTIST FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY

Picking a makeup artist for your special day can be a daunting task to any bride. With usually dozens of choices at all different esthetics and price points, it can be hard to narrow down who is the best fit for your wedding day. In this blog post, I will walk you through the key points in determining how to pick the right makeup artist for your wedding day!

DETERMINE THE AESTHETIC OF YOUR WEDDING

Are you a low key bride getting married on a beach? or are you a glamorous bride getting married in a fancy hotel?

These are very important pieces of information you will need to consider when choosing a makeup artist that is right for the occasion. Knowing your overall esthetic is very important, and knowing the aesthetic of your the artists you are choosing from is key.

CREATE AN INSPIRATION BOARD OF ALL YOUR FAVOURITE BRIDAL LOOKS

Using a website such as PINTEREST will help you determine what style of makeup you like best. Try to find photos of people who have similar features as you. Example: If you have dark hair; try to find photos of women with dark hair as this will easier for you to picture how the makeup will suit your features as well.

Try to avoid pinning any photos that are obviously photoshopped, as these photos can be very misleading and create an unrealistic expectation for your makeup artist.

DOES THIS INSPIRATION BOARD MATCH THE MAKEUP ARTISTS PORTFOLIO?

You’ve pinned gorgeous ethereal looks with subtle hints of blush, but the makeup artists portfolio you’re looking at is full of harsh black liners and heavy lashes. Is what you’re wanting aligning with what the artist is showcasing?

Just like picking a tattoo artist… would you hire someone who specializes in cartoons to tattoo a realism portrait? Probably not.

Makeup artists are the same. Find a makeup artist whose portfolio you LOVE. Do not rely on the fact that they are a professional makeup artist that they can create the look you want. Not all makeup artists are the same. Each artist has an esthetic and style. Find a makeup artist whose style matches up with your own.

CONNECTION

You will likely be spending most of the morning of your wedding day with this makeup artist. Are they going to provide a positive experience or a negative one? Do you feel connected to this artist?

Be sure to follow your makeup artist on social media to get a feel for their personality! Are they not active on social media? Ask for a quick phone call or coffee date to get to know them!

DO THEY TAKE SANITATION SERIOUSLY

Be sure to ask questions, because your health and safety is more important than anything. Unfortunately sanitation and cleanliness is one of the most overlooked aspects of the beauty industry. Did you know that you can contract things like cold sores (Herpes Simplex Virus type 1), Staph Infection, Pink Eye and all sorts of other nasty things? A professional makeup artists will know the proper procedures to ensure client and artist safety. Make sure to talk to your artist about what methods they use, and if they are hesitant... move on and find someone who knows proper procedure when it comes to sanitation!

ARE YOU REQUIRED TO BRING ANYTHING?

Be sure to be educated on what is expected of you as the client. Is your makeup artist requesting you to bring any your own makeup? If so, this person is likely not a professional makeup artist. Most professional artist will have you completely covered and never ask you to bring anything (unless you have a specific product you are requesting).

DO THEY HAVE A CONTRACT?

This part is absolutely imperative and in my opinion, the most important. If your makeup artist does not have a contract… do not hire them.

A contract is used to protect both parties from problems that may arise. Protect yourself and hire someone who takes their business seriously enough to have a contract in place. The contract should not only protect the artist, but also protect you financially from loss if the artist does not abide by the agreement.

On your wedding day, you want to feel your most beautiful. When you feel beautiful, you look beautiful. And when you look beautiful, your confidence shows. Hire the artist who makes you excited, and don’t hire anyone who gives you bad gut feelings. A great makeup artist will ease your nerves and get you excited for the big day! Hopefully these tips will help you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding day!
